If you are a tourist and staying in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on a Sunday you will
be able to visit plenty of antique shops in the the old quarter, known as
'The Old Town'. You will find there is a unique atmosphere here that rivals
any of the fashionable antique markets that are to be found in places like
Paris, New York or London.
Close by there are also plenty of fashion shops; open air jewellery stands;
painting stalls, as well as a good selection of reasonably priced cafes and
restaurants, that are scattered in and around 'The Old Town', that you can
visit for a break from your time spent browsing around.
Many of the antique shops have English, German and Russian speaking
assistants who are extremely knowledgable and will go out of their way to
explain the finer points of old Bulgarian furniture; Turkish military
memoribilia; Swiss time pieces; silver candle sticks; old crafted storage
chests; ornate pottery and earthenware; traditional Bulgarian dress, as
well as collections of many other refinements from days gone by.
The best day to be here has got to be Sunday, everywhere people are
crowding around - walking about; going from shop to shop; sitting in
pavement cafes and restaurants. There is also the added benefit of the
plenty of cheap hostel accommodation that can be found within 'The Old
Town' as well.
